Retired Conocoan Dies Unexpectedly |
Roy D. Hawkins, 65, former head of the machine maintenance department at Continental Oil Company, died unexpectedly early Friday afternoon. He was vacationing in Montebello, Calif. when he suffered a heart seizure.He was born Oct. 11, 1895, in the Indian Territory, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Hawkins. He received his education in Joplin, Mo., and was married to Agnes HILL on Aug. 23, 1923 at Joliet, Ill. They lived in Topeka, Kan, Tulsa and Joplin before moving to Ponca City in 1934 when Hawkins went to work for Continental.He worked in the mading and stationery department as well as machine maintenance. He also maintained many office machines for business concerns and individuals in Ponca City. Hawkins retired at Continental in 1960.He was a member of the first Christian Church and active in Masonic Lodge 83 A. F. & A. M., of which he was a past master. He also was a member of the York Rite. Hawkins was a veteran of World War 1 and an avid sportsman.Surviving are his wife of the home, 316 East Brookfield; one daughter, Mrs. Bill Leonard, 1700 Holbrook; a son, Jack, Bartlesville; a brother Ray J. and two sisters, Mrs. Freda Payne and Mrs. Jessie Sturmer, all of Joplin; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.Funeral services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the First Christian Church with the Rev. Carlton D. Garrison, minister, officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel. |
